Basque is a 4-piece screamo band from Kitchener, Ontario. Mixing ethereal dream-like riffs with heavy powerviolence inspired bursts under a droning wall of noise, Basque has brought forth a record that peaks and falls constantly. A unique take on the screamo genre that forgoes a linear progression and embraces a chaotic rise and fall of emotions throughout the short 7 song, 20 minute album. The bleak lyricism on the record touches on modern day capitalism, addiction issues, confessional repentance, and inescapable melancholy. Pairing the simple yet dismal words with the mathematical intensity of the instruments, it is undeniable that Pain Without Hope Of Healing is a highly personal and emotionally charged project.

Quiet Fear are a Chicanx band from Los Angeles, California. Post-hardcore riffs with yelled vocals of empowerment. A band that gave me chills the first time I heard them Combining chaos, melody and bouncey, almost hopeful instrumentals while pushing the emotionally compromising atmosphere that comes along with the best of todays screamo.

City Of Industry announces the November 11th release of new album Spiritual West.
On Spiritual West, frontman John Caraveo's impassioned vocals hit like the confessions of a man who has reached his breaking point; the band's moody, metallic, hardcore punk drives forward, laced with morose melodies, drenched in Pacific Northwest rain. The sheer urgency sets this band apart from the mob. There are not many comparisons to be drawn; Converge or Show Me The Body might be two.
As raw and real as City of Industry can be, there is another side to the band. Throughout Spiritual West, the trio's musical experimentation creates moments of grandeur that elevate the album to an even higher place. Triumphant church bells, gleeful glockenspiel, ominous synths, and sampled voices add color and contrast that make the songs penetrate that much deeper and show, once again, that Caraveo and his comrades – bassist Jack Thompson and drummer Pablo Lara – are following no one else's rules.
Spiritual West was recorded by Nich Wilbur (Mt. Eerie, Sumac) and mixed and mastered by Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Gouge Away).
FFO: Ultra Love, Supine, Portayal of Guilt

Foxmoulder, a legendary band from Toronto, ON. A screamo band deserving of the term "dark hardcore," Foxmoulder uses crushing bass tones, and bleak riffs under passionate vocal delivery. The group made a mark on the Ontario DIY scene, with the vocalist Em, running A Mountain Far Records, and the other members going on to form the much loved Respire. No Funeral is teaming up with our friends at Zegema Beach to bring you a discography cassette limited to 100 across 3 variants. Included with each cassette is reissue of a zine originally handed out at the the final Foxmoulder show in 2017.

2020 YEAR IN REVIEW:
As everyone already knows, this year has been a bummer. Many tours, shows, and events were cancelled.
The arts community suffered greatly, along with a whole list of other reasons why this year sucked...but we wont get into that.
We're here to talk about some great releases from this past year! Here is a retrospective list on what we did !
///
Amitie / Karloff - SPLIT /// 5" lathe cut + cassette
released January 16, 2020 //
2 songs, clocking in at under a minute and a half, this split is a great representation of modern day emoviolence. Heavy and aggressive tones, with slow emotional transitions. Some great (and very very time consuming) handmade packaging on the 5", the Karloff copies were only supposed to be sold at live shows, but we only get to sell one before the pandemic. Watch out for these re-surfacing sometime in 2021.
Karloff - LIVE 2019 /// cassette
released January 16, 2020 //
A cassette only version of the Karloff live set. Recorded in our practice space, as if it were a live gig. Showcasing songs off of the upcoming LP (AVAILABLE IN 2021.) Complete with mistakes, and the raw energy that a live show normally has. The No Funeral edition has the same catalogue # as the Amitie / Karloff split, which is a mistake. This was also released in limited quantities by a ton of other labels, including Zegema Beach Records, Larry Records, Callous Records, Jean Scene Creamers, Le Blast, Glue Gun Records, Les Disques Rabat-Joie
TWINS - SOON /// vinyl + cassette
released February 15, 2020
A math-rock / post-hardcore record that was extremely overlooked. TWINS are a german band who nailed it out of the park with their first release. This full length was so good, we had to make it our first vinyl release. Our 20 copies featured an additional art-piece that can be used as an alternate cover. The cockroach lino - stamp was designed + made by our longtime friend Jose Castillo, who you may recognize from an earlier No Funeral Zine.
Dead Friend Collective - Eternal Slumber Party /// cassette
released September 4, 2020
The second demo album from DFC. This one still with the aggressive acoustic punk improv recordings that are familiar if you heard their first cassette "What A Mess!" This was also released along side another DFC cassette with a live recording from a Frail Body / Karloff / Romancer / Terry Green / DFC basement show, entitled "Alive! at Euclid"
kafka. / junior leagues / Virginia On Duty / tdoafs - SPLIT /// cassette
released May 8, 2020
Regretfully we only made 50 copies of the phenomenal split. Featuring bands from czechia, russia, malaysia and canada. A mix of new and legendary bands, this is one of the coolest splits to come out this year (ignore my bias)
dianacrawls - A Glitter Manifesto /// cassette
released April 7, 2020
My love for this band is no secret, and this EP did not dissapoint. Bringing in odd elements of electro and pop music to bookend the blistering party-violence bands we are used to hearing with this group. Any year with new dianacrawls can't be all that bad.
Gillian Carter - Lost Ships Sinking With The Sunset /// cassette
released May 14, 2020
A cassette reissue of the amazing 10" originally released by Dog Knights. A softer entry in the Gillian Carter catalogue if you are familiar with the new record, ...This Earth Shaped Tomb (also an amazing record.) It was a pleasure to release something for this beautiful group of people.
Yume - Fever Scheme
released May 7, 2020
This twinkly emo band returns with odd vocal melodys, interesting time changes, and a clear diverse influence from many different genres. This year brought Yume + the No Fun team even closer, and revisiting this EP makes me even more excited for what these dudes have coming up!
Amitié / Empatia / Marée Noire - SPLIT /// cassette
released May 1, 2020
Another Amitié split! This time with our new friends Empatia and our old friends Marée Noire ! Its nice to have an * official * Marée Noire NoFun release. (see our uncatalogued Frail Body / Marée Noire split, and our Marée Noire "Mothra" bootleg t-shirts)
Merzbow - Screaming Dove /// vinyl
released November 20, 2020
The most prolific artist in the world of noise returns for a second NoFun release! It's been a humbling experience working Merzbow, and has been a direct influence on wanting to push the label further and further! Super special awesome thank you to Xavier Trudeau (Marée Noire) for the artwork, layout and advertisements for this release!
Riviera - canzoni dal 2010 /// cassette
released July 29, 2020
A discography-so-far cassette release for a band I just found this year. Not sure how I missed them before, but their brand of emotional and melodic punk is something unique and original to the world! Also the first No Funeral split release with our pals + supported LongLegsLongArms from Japan!
Reste / Chivàla - SPLIT /// cassette
released August 31, 2020
Excellent split from past pals Chivàla. Reste is ex-Yusuke, so you know they're great! I dubbed all the tapes for the plethora of labels involved in this release, so I don't think the nightmare flashbacks of trying to get this out in a timely manner will ever disappear.
Age Sixteen - Age Sixteen /// vinyl
released September 11, 2020
The infamous vinyl release of this discography LP FINALLY happened. I have been waiting a while for this, and decided to reach out to see if i could be of help, and what do ya know? We end up spearheading the first press of this release and creating some wild packaging in the process. Hand marbled LP jackets with paint, and screen printed the cover. Stamped the reverse. Designed inserts, stamped the center labels, and numbered each copy. A lot of work, and sold out in 72 hours, but it was totally worth it. Maybe we will do a second run of these. Maybe not, I dont know.
Yume / Dead Friend Collective - SPLIT /// cassette
released November 6, 2020
A split between friends. This release sees a more hardcore / emoviolence approach from Yume, and the first full band output from DFC, branding a similar style to that of CSTVT, You'll Live and Terry Green. The DFC song was recorded by Vince Rosy (Karloff) and featuring guest vocals from me! Huge growth from their previous material and definitely a peak into the future of both groups, this is not a release that should be overlooked!
Cell Press - Cell Press /// cassette
released November 27, 2020
The final No Funeral release of 2020! The debut EP from montreal hardcore outfit Cell Press knocked me on my ass the first time I heard it. Featuring sweet mosh parts, interesting riffs and unhinged vocal delivery. It was great to work with Cell Press and Ancient Temple Recordings to get this tape out! We are also currently (as I type this) printing the pre-order shirts! Sorry for the wait if you've ordered, and sorry for your loss if you missed out!
No Funeral Compilation 2
released October 23, 2020
A great way for me to work with friends I otherwise wouldn't have! With some past NoFun alumni and some new entries into our family, I always love putting these together. All exclusive tracks that you wont find anywhere else! This one features Au bout de mes lèvres, Apostles of Eris, Botfly, Ryloth, Shifting The Grief Target, Paper Hats, DFC, Yume, Dianacrawls, and This Place Is Actually The Worst !

Horror has been a big influence on us since the beginning of No Funeral. It only feels fitting we do something to commemorate Halloween! In honour of this spooky holiday, we decided to ask some of our friends about their favourite horror movies! Hopefully you can find something new to consume, and keep the chills going well into November!
Sean Arsenian (Cell Press, The Great Sabatini):
The Thing (1982, John Carpenter). Hard to pick a favorite anything but The Thing is one of the most rewatchable movies ever for me. I thinks its carpenters' best movie. Its bleak, but fun to watch. The creature effects untouchable. RIP Wilford Brimley. Honourable mentions: The Ugly, Hellraiser 2
Keegan Godspeed (Botfly):
Intuder (1989, Scott Spiegel). Over quarantine I watched a lot of 80s slasher movies, but one of my absolute favourites was “Intruder” from 1989. It’s got everything you want in an 80s slasher/horror movie. It’s got bozos, it’s got blood, it’s got terrible audio editing where the music is often louder than the dialogue. It’s a fun watch and the kill scenes are really good!
Doro Samson-Valdez (dianacrawls, Marée Noire):
Naked Lunch (1991, David Cronenberg)
I guess this movie wouldn't be considered horror for some people. But to me, some of the most terrifying things resides banal human life experiences and Naked Lunch hits hard on one of these.
Although the film takes place in an altogether surrealist environment, it brings out a narrative that is truly horrifying; the disconnection from reality that occurs without you even realizing that you are, in fact, spiraling down to insanity. The main character, a pest control agent, becomes addicted to pest poison and you basically just follow him digging deeper and deeper into a world that is as far as you could imagine from the one we live in.
As if this wasn't already enough, the movie is filled with insane visceral body horror that makes you feel so uncomfortable and filthy. All of the special effects are so well done and polished that it becomes beautiful in a slimy repulsive way, it's truly magnificent.
That, blended with the incredibly bizarre sexual tension that goes on the whole movie, instantly made it a top tier psychological horror movie for me. Honorable mentions: Uzumaki, Perfect Blue, Demons, Alien.
Bob Caruso (Gillian Carter):
Young Frankenstein. (1974, Mel Brooks)
Picking out my favorite horror film for Halloween is a tough question for me. My pick is a movie that my friends and I can re-watch anytime and that is Young Frankenstein. This movie is a classic and the benchmark of parody horror films. Unlike other parody movies as the Scary Movie franchise, this movie is done with plenty of care and admiration to the early Universal Monster movies. Mel Brooks even used the original lab equipment props from the original 1931 film. With iconic comedic actors throughout the cast, a ton of quotable lines, and shot beautifully on black and white film. This is a great movie during the Halloween season. Honorable mentions for horror/comedy: An American Werewolf of London, Fright Night, Braindead (Dead Alive)
Andrew Coughlin (Yume):
The Green Inferno (2013, Eli Roth). It's comical enough when it gets campy and it's gruesome enough when it gets serious. The way the two are blended is classic. Honourable mentions: Suspiria (2018)
Matt Morales (Amitié):
The Witch (2015, Robert Eggers). I would have to say the The Witch has to be my favorite horror film in recent time. I love everything about it, the cinematography, the soundscapes, the characters and the historical references to how brutal the Puritan life style and ideology, brought over by the Church of England, really was. From the demonizing of outsiders and the unknown to patriarchal ethics, this movie hits all points. I obsessed over this movie for a while when it first came out, so much so I started a two piece doom band called Black Phillip. We played a couple shows here and there, never got to record though. And runner ups for favorite movies include: Evil Dead, The Conjuring, The Omen, and Poltergeist.
Max Scheffel (Paper Hats)
Dead Alive (1992, Peter Jackson). The brilliant slapstick rom-com zombie gorefest from a young Peter Jackson. This movie takes the conventions of each of these genres that it plays with and turns them all the way up to the point of complete and utter absurdity. An overbearing mother whose face slowly falls apart, an ass-kicking priest who knows martial arts, and a completely insane scene involving a lawnmower that apparently set the record for the highest volume of fake blood used in a single scene in a movie. Horror films can be unsurpassable in their ability to explore the fears and anxieties that live within each and every one of us, and while Dead Alive doesn't really bother with any of that, its totally unique genre mashup and cheeky low budget charm is incredibly fun and entertaining. Honourable mentions: The Shining, Possession, Eraserhead, Alien
Aeryn Santillan (Massa Nera, This Place Is Actually The Worst):
It (1990, Tommy Lee Wallace) – As far as movies that make my skin crawl this one takes the cake. It’s got a personal story behind it too. So when I was like 7 I watched this on tv with my mom because I loved like Goosebumps and Are You Afraid of the Dark, and Tales from the Crypt…anyways, this nightmare fuel wrecked me and guess what my mom had got us tickets to that same weekend? The fucking circus. It was the WORST haha. So because of this I couldn’t watch it for years. I didn’t actually watch it again until I was 23 and I loved it. It has all the campy horror things I love: a group of friends on bikes, yellow raincoats, a small town with lots of trees, etc. I also loved that it still freaked me out too—I can see some of the scenes so vividly. I mean the story kinda is not my favorite at the end but the aesthetic is great and left a lasting impression. Still trying to steel myself to watch the remakes. Honourable Mentions: Alien, Aliens The Silence of the Lamb . Videogame honourable mentions: Dead Space, Resident Evil 2, and Silent Hill 2
David Norman (Our Future is An Absolute Shadow, Apostles of Eris, Zegema Beach Records)
Attack The Block (2011, Joe Cornish). Sick UK sci-fi/horror with aliens from the point of view of a young gang. The no-eyed, ridiculously dark and furry aliens are excellent, as is the British banter and those slow-motion scenes. Honorable mentions: Candyman (1992), Cabin In The Woods, It (1990), It (2017), The Shining
Jake Dodge (Dead Friend Collective):
The Fly (1986, David Cronenberg). In recent years, Cronenberg's "The Fly" has haunted me like a fever dream from the lost era of late night channel surfing. Bewildered at the highly impressionable ripe age of 10 years old, I witnessed the tragic spiraling decay of Dr. Seth Brundle. Unsure of what was unfolding upon my wide eyed innocence, the grotesquely discomforting body horror plagued my very being and warped my love for cinema.
The tragic downfall of Seth Brundle, brilliantly played by the eccentric Jeff Goldblum, embodied every fibre that was necessary to showcase the imploding insanity and heartbreak of this "horrific love story". Pair this wild energy with the beautifully casted Geena Davis, and the unabashedly adorable chemistry carries this story at a brisk 96 mins.
Who knew that the simple story of a man turning into a fly could hit so many marks for me. Perfectly paced runtime, simple but effective cinematography, brilliant practical effects that still hold up to this day and an honest tale of losing oneself to their craft.
Long live the tale of Dr. Seth Brundle!
Honourable mentions: The Hills Have Eyes (2006), Scream (1996), Night of the Living Dead (1990), Evil Dead (2013)
Nathaniel Murray (Karloff, No Funeral Records)
Angst (1983, Gerald Kargl). An Austrian film, following a serial killer as he is released from prison. One of the most intense and visceral films I've ever seen. It has an subtle score, unique camerawork involving mirrors and odd angles for uncomfortable frames, brutal killings and a totally warped protagonist. Being the only film the director made, this is one of the movies i consider to be a pure masterpiece. A must see for people who are fans of feeling uneasy. Honourable mentions: Tenebrae, Suspiria (1977), The Bride of Frankenstein
//
Happy Halloween!

Releases November 6th 2020.
A 2 track split that shot for the stars, and hit. A more aggressive sounding track from both bands. The usually math-rock, emo fusion we see from Yume is pushed into a full-blown screamo attack. The same goes for Dead Friend Collective, who up until this point has been an improvised acoustic act. This sees DFC approach a full band with complete confidence. Both songs feature technical riffing and cathartic vocal delivery, without sacrificing the melody that both bands have been known for previous. Easily he most ambitious material to date, from both artists. The limited edition cassette is a hand-painted "starburst" edition (50 copies) to match the unique artwork originally titled "Side By Side" by Emily P Townsend.

nf-031 - Merzbow - Screaming Dove - No Funeral Records
Merzbow is a japanese noise project started in 1979 by Masami Akita. Arguably the most prolific artist in the world of noise, Merzbow draws from many different influences creating an immense discography full of legendary records. "Screaming Dove" is no exception. Clocking in with 4 tracks slightly under an hour. This record features a harsh, more metallic approach to noise, than the previous Merzbow / No Funeral release "Dead Lotus." With layout by Xavier Trudeau, this harsh piece of work is packaged in a beautiful sleeve with OBI strip on white / blue swirl vinyl limited to 300 copies. Also available is a 4 pin-back button set with art inspired by the LP design.

SURPRISE!
~
Age Sixteen was a band from 2009-2011. Based in Baltimore, MD, the short-lived group only released a short LP, a split and a handful of demos. This release compiles the final versions of their songs onto one release.
~
Playing a mix of slow emo melodies and spastic technical chaos, Age Sixteen still holds up as one of the most unique hardcore bands to come from the US. The technical guitar playing, and passionate vocals will remind some of modern bands like Lord Snow, Karloff, Sleeper Wave.
~
Originally meant to be pressed in 2015, there is a lot of mystery surrounding the vinyl version of this material, but it is finally seeing the light of day with the help of No Funeral Records (CAN, nf-034) and Artificial Distro (USA, AD-001)
~
The No Funeral Records edition features "Coke Bottle Clear" vinyl with a paint marble effect on the cover with a screenprinted graphic. Limited and numbered to 100, it is unlikely to be presented like this again.
~
The Artificial Distro edition features "Coke Bottle Clear" vinyl with screenprinted covers, limited to 200.
